Go Tigers

My alma mater is the number one ranked team in all of college football. If you were to have asked me about the likelihood of Mizzou being ranked number one before the college football season began, I believe that my answer would have been between slim & none. And yet, here we are with the Big 12 championship game on the line on Saturday and only Oklahoma standing between Mizzou and a shot at the national championship. I know that Mizzou lost to the Sooners earlier this season, but I'm guessing that this one is going to be different. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Mizzou is going to win it all and everything is going to be excellent.

A few other things. One - Todd Sauerbrun, the Bronco's punter, has learned his lesson. Before the Bears game today, he told reporters that he wasn't afraid of kicking to Devin Hester. And it looked like everything was going according to Sauerbrun's plan before he punted it to Hester in the second quarter. Bam, just like Batman in the olden days, Hester was running it back to the endzone. So you'd figure that Sauerbrun would have realized that he shouldn't tempt fate and kick away from Hester like the rest of the league, only he didn't. After a great Bronco touchdown drive, he kicked off to Hester down the middle of the field and Hester burned them again. It doesn't make any sense to me. He's only scored 11 return touchdowns in 26 games.

Two - the Cadillac Ranch isn't a bad little place to go to on a Friday night. Of course, it's better when all of your family goes with you, but still, it was a good time.

I'm looking forward to Saturday. Caleb may be coming up for the game next weekend, so let's hope it's a happy occasion where we celebrate Mizzou's victory.

M - I - Z!

Awesome. If the Tigers win this one, I'm going to try to go the national championship game.

I've been reading for a bit now, and I had to comment on this post. College sports are all I follow so I couldnt resist.

Not to be totally rude but a lot of teams in the top ten are there due to dumb luck. The BCS HAD to rank them because they didn't have any other choice. This was a season of upsets and teams that deserved to be there were knocked out by teams like Miz, Kansas, WV, USF because of their easy seasons.

Play a season like the SEC has to and you wouldn't see the top 15, let alone the top 5 or 10. Just staying in the top 20 is a feat when you play teams that are persistently in the Top 10. Now throw in the fact that many of these players play through injuries (such as Tebow playing through a hurt shoulder for two weeks and then playing through a badly broken hand this past weekend and still managing to reach record breaking stats?).

If there was ever a season in need of a playoff season this is badly it. Teams are going to BCS bowls that would have their asses handed to them by teams that should be there. Be careful about getting too cocky just because your team and a few others are lucky right now. Play a season that USC has to play, a season that the Ducks face. Les Miles had it handed to him - he should have known not to talk like that, but then again we know hes a pompous prick. Ohio made the same mistake and had their foot shoved in their mouth by a crazy 37 pts, but again, any school who has to emphasize the THE before their name is pretentious and deserves to be humiliated (luckily it happened twice in one year, two sports, by the same team). You are there because of a weird season - keep that in mind. So is WV. So is THE OS. You were right in the beginning of the season. Your chances were slim to none. This was luck. Enjoy it while you can.

Dear anonymous,

In many ways, you're right. Mizzou is only ranked number one because they have been lucky. But then again, a lot of sports is luck and I'm not ready to take away what they've accomplished because other teams have faltered or played tougher schedules. I'm happy that the ball has bounced the Tigers way so far and I hope it continues to do so. And while the Big 12 North isn't the greatest division in college football, the Big 12 South has quite a few teams that are always nationally ranked. So while I think that you raise a few good points, I don't think it's just luck that has Missouri where they are. They've played hard, beaten some good teams and earned the chance to play for the title. I don't think they've the end-all, be-all program yet and for them to beat Oklahoma on Saturday won't make them so. They've got a long way to go before they're even in the top 20 overall programs for a college, but I'm enjoying what they've accomplished so far and I'm hoping it continues. Thanks for reading and feel free to comment whenever you'd like.
